Epic - Kids' Books & Reading

Epic is a free reading app for kids ages 2-12. Some people call it a Netflix for books. It includes both audiobooks and digital books. The app gives subscription users access to over 35,000 books and learning videos, with the ability to instantly read as many books as users want.

Books are divided by genre, but also into categories such as “Read to Me” which is their wide selection of audiobooks. Select books include an online multiple-choice quiz. We love that Epic has a variety of high-quality books ranging from early readers, picture books, graphic novels and chapter books and most are from leading publishers like Scholastic, National Geographic, Harper Collins, Macmillan, Smithsonian just to name a few. Some of their most read books are Biscuit, Flat Stanley, Big Nate, Fancy Nancy, The Chronicles of Narnia, Warriors, National Geographic Kids, Batman, Goosebumps, Clifford, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Goodnight Moon. A ratings system, searchable library and the ability to browse a growing selection of titles. You can even find Spanish and Chinese titles now.

Books and videos can be viewed on a mobile device and are accessible anywhere. Parents can set up multiple profiles and personalized recommendations for each child are offered based on their reading levels and interests. An Epic account and WiFi is required to access audiobooks and ebooks. Users can try a 7 day free trial and then upgrade to a paid subscription for $11.99 a month or pay $79 annually.

There are two different plans for teachers and librarians. Epic! School, which is completely free and only available on school days from 7:00 - 3:00 pm. There is also a paid plan called, Epic! School Plus, which is available to students, teachers, and staff 24/7 with more content available.

We like how Epic! motivates readers with badges and rewards Teachers can also assign books and track individual student's reading progress. The app itself can be overwhelming as there are many choices. There is a search button to find audiobooks (Read to Me books) ebooks, and videos. We recommend using a headphones to help kids stay focused in their books and to keep from distracting others.

We trialed this app with ADHD students and struggling readers. We feel like this would also be a great app for students with dyslexia as the words are highlighted as they are read aloud.
