My First AAC application is a helpful application for teachers, parents, and therapists to use with non-verbal children ages 12 months-10 years of age. This application is designed to increase independent communication by assisting in expressing needs and wants in several different categories. Some categories include expressions, social, greetings, activities, colors, food, shapes, questions, weather, clothes, etc. The program comes designed with the option of creating an icon layout of 2 or 8. For example, if you were giving your student or child a layout with different expressions, you have the choice to show all 8 expressions or delete as many as you choose down to 2 different expressions. This all depends on the child's level. We have used this application with a 4 year old non-verbal child at a 2 year old level. Currently this student is using this application to label objects based on color and shape. He also uses it prior to starting work as a ""first,"" ""then"" activity to prepare him for what will be expected of him. All the pictures in the categories are very child-friendly and give you an option of a male or female child's voice. It also allows you to go into "My Icons" and add images from your personal picture library or with the iPad2, take pictures on the fly with the on-board camera. My First AAC is a great application for children and parents just starting out with an AAC device. Scrolling through the categories and options is easy using the navigation screen. This application is a useful tool to use in school and at home as an alternative way for non-verbal children or those with speech delays to communicate with others.
