Netflix

Netflix is a free video streaming app for fun, entertainment, and education. The app gives subscription users access to unlimited TV shows and movies, the ability to instantly watch as many TV episodes and movies as users want, a ratings system, searchable library and the ability to browse a growing selection of titles. Netflix can be used in classrooms to instantly access content, provide students with documentaries and films and share foreign language films or program series that target specific educational topics. Older adults enjoy Netflix for entertainment and like using the app to view content on their mobile device. We recommend this app for users ages 18 and up or younger users be monitored by an adult while using the app. A Netflix account and WiFi is required to stream videos. Users can try a month free and then upgrade to a paid subscription for $7.99 a month. Our reviewer trialed this app with her class of high school students with developmental disabilities. The most challenging part was signing up. First, the class signed up for a Netflix account on a computer. Next, each user put their email address and created a password or signed up via a Facebook account. When all the students were registered, we had to enter credit card information to get the free trial month. Some of the members of the class already had an account so we all downloaded the Netflix app to a mobile device. The app itself can be overwhelming as there are many choices. There is a search button to find movies or television shows. The app was a hit for the class because it is simple enough for them to navigate and the content is entertaining. Many of the members do not have televisions in their bedrooms so they can watch Netflix on their mobile device anywhere in their bedroom or anywhere in the house. We recommend using a headset while in the company of others as to not distract them. For those in our reviewer's class that live alone the app is a nice sense of comfort. Many have added the app to their favorites lists.
